KNOW YOUR PROPHET (PBUH) (sent by Nazir Khan)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him)

Dear Friends, when I heard the tape about the Prophet (PBUH) I discovered that I actually knew very little about him, I didn't know his full name, what he looked like and what he was like with other people, I discovered that what I knew was very little actually. And even this tape of Amr Khaled - yes him again! :) this tape only scratch's the surface of the life and the person of the Prophet (PBUH), but I think that at least it's a start :) So I have tried again to translate as much as I could parts of this tape mainly for those Muslim friends of mine who do not know much Arabic, and I hope at least some of you would find information here that you did know before. Again, please forgive any spelling, grammar or even content mistakes that I might be un-aware of.

The Prophets Name:
How many people know the full name of the Prophet (PBUH)? Many people just know that his name is Mohammad (PBUH) but nothing more.

The Prophets full name is:
Mohammad Ibn Abdelah, Ibn Abdel-Mutaleb, Ibn Hashem, Ibn Abd-Manaf, Ibn Kossay, Ibn kellab, Ibn Mura, Ibn Ka3b, Ibn Looay, Ibn Ghaleb, Ibn Fehr. And Fehr is himself Koriesh (the name of the tribe of Mecca) - it was Fehr who was first named Koriesh, and Fehr is from the son of Adnan, and Adnan is the son of Ismail, and Ismail is the son of Ibrahim (PBUH). The full name might seem abit long or difficult to some of us but imagine when inshallah you meet the Prophet (PBUH) in heaven and you know his full name, wouldn't it be beautiful when you tell the Prophet (PBUH) I know by heart your full name and then you recite it to him: Mohammad Ibn Abdelah, Ibn Abdel-Mutaleb, Ibn Hashem, Ibn Abd-Manaf, Ibn Kossay, Ibn kellab, Ibn Mura, Ibn Ka3b, Ibn Looay, Ibn Ghaleb, Ibn Fehr. And Fehr is himself Koriesh (the name of the tribe of Mecca) - it was Fehr who was first named Koriesh, and Fehr is from the son of Adnan, and Adnan is the son of Ismail, and Ismail is the son of Ibrahim (PBUH).

So what if its too hard for you and you can't learn the full name by heart, then you should at least know the Prophets Family name to the 3rd generation, which is:

Mohammad Ibn Abdelah, Ibn Abdel-Mutaleb, Ibn Hashem

The Prophets Date of Birth:
In Arabic months the Prophet (PBUH) was born on the 12th of Rabie3 Al Awal - which was a Monday (and that is why the Prophet used to fast every Monday) and it was in the year 570 - in August, but some have also said that it was March.

The Prophets Family:

The Prophets mothers name was: Amena Bint Wahb

The Prophets grand father: Abdel-Mutaleb had 10 sons and 6 daughters.

So the Prophet (PBUH) had 15 Uncles and Aunts form his fathers side, some of the most famous of these where:
* Al Hareth - who died before the message was revealed to the Prophet.
* Al Abass
* Abu Taleb - who took care of the Prophet (PBUH).
* Abu Lahab - who died a kafer.
* Hamza - the Lion of Islam.

Some of the Prophets famous Aunts where:
* Ateka
* Safeya - who is the mother of El Zoobier Ibn Awam - who was a Sa7aby of the Prophet.
* Arwa
* Omina

What did the Prophet (PBUH) look like?
We should know how the Prophet (PBUH) looked and try to learn or memorize it, because the Prophet (PBUH) said that: "who ever saw me in his sleep - has really seen me, because the devil can not make him self look like me" - so the devil can never come in the form of the Prophet (PBUH), but many people actually misunderstand this hadeeth, because the devil might not be able to come looking like the Prophet (PBUH) but he can come to you in your dreams in the form of an old good looking man for example and tell you "I am the Prophet" - so he can come in any form and tell you that he is the Prophet, but he can not come in the real actual form or look like the Prophet (PBUH) - so that's why we should know what the Prophet (PBUH) looked like. Because those people who really wish so hard to see the Prophet (PBUH) in their dreams must know what the Prophet (PBUH) really looked like so that if someone comes to them in their dream and claims that he is the P
The Sa7aba have described how the Prophet (PBUH) looked like in great detail, so much so that there are complete books that just describe what he looked like.
So someone could come and say I saw the Prophet (PBUH) in my sleep, I saw this beautiful man with a white beard and white hair, and he was dark skinned and beautiful - and then you would know that that's not the Prophet, and even though he might be sure its him, you tell him no it isn't because that's not how the Prophet (PBUH) looked like and then you describe the Prophet (PBUH) to him.
One of the most famous people who described the Prophet from seeing him was: Om Me3bed:
She described his hair as not soft or rough but in-between - similar to the hair of Egyptians, so not too soft and not too rough.
His hair was black - deep black with no white hair, accept for when the Prophet (PBUH) turned 60 years old and was nearing his death, then appeared 12 white hairs. How do we know that it was 12 white hairs? - because Abdelah Ibn-Masood said that he counted himself the white hairs on the Prophets head while he was sleeping.
Can you imagine how beautiful it was for Abdelah Ibn-Masood to be able to watch the Prophet while he was sleeping and count his white hair?
Abdelah Ibn-Masood also said that he saw on the Prophets chest 3 white hairs.
So now we established that the Prophets hair was black - deep black.
The Prophets beard: was heavy and wide and filled his chest, but was light from the sides so that if you look at the Prophet (PBUH) from the front you could see his ears - the beard was also black.
The Prophets Mustache: was precise and not thick or full of hair, and his mustache did not meet with his beard, and little hair in the part right underneath the nose - the center.
The Prophets Chest hair: he had a lot of chest hair but it came together and closer as it went down his stomach till it formed like a line when it reached his belly button.
The Prophet also had whats called "the seal of the Prophets", which every Prophet had, Moses, Jesus,...and all of them. And this seal is located behind the Prophets head on the first joint from the top of the spinal cord. And it looks like a black birth mark that has 3 hairs coming out of it.
The Prophets Eye Brows: they weren't too thick or too thin and in between them there was a vein that would only be visible when the Prophet was mad. And if he got mad the vein became visible.

3 things became visible when the Prophet (PBUH) became mad:
1- The vein between his eye brows became visible.
2- His face turned red.
3- The area at the lower part of the neck kinda inflated.
And the Prophet (PBUH) only got mad when God was being disobeyed.

The Prophets Eyes: where large and the white part was very white, while the pupil was very black - so large eyes with an intense black pupil surrounded by deep white .

The Prophets Nose: was precise and sharp on its tip.

The Prophets Mouth: he had wide lips and equal looking teeth, although this changed after the battle of "Ohod" because 2 of his teeth where broken - so the look of his teeth changed after this battle.

The Prophets skin color: he was white with some reddish in the face - unlike most people of Mecca.

The Prophets height: he had average height, not too tall or short - around 183cm,...when you see him among tall people you would not think he is short, and when you see him among short people, you wouldn't think he is too tall.

The Prophets hands: he had big hands and large palms.

What was the Prophet (PBUH) like as a person?
Al Hassan Ibn Ali (who's grandfather was the Prophet (PBUH) ) once went to Abu Hurayra to ask him to describe his grandfather (The Prophet (PBUH) )for him, because the Prophet had died while Al Hassan was still a child so he did not have much memory of him.

Abu Hurayra began to describe the Prophet (PBUH) to him as follows:

"He was sad many days - there where constantly a lot of problems and difficulties he had to face, he had to be patient through so many ordeals, and put up with so much hurt. He was always thinking, studying and contemplating Gods creations, Gods words and everything around him. He rarely rested, he would stay up days and nights. He never talked unless there was a reason - if there was no purpose for him to say something, he didn't. When he walked he looked so full of dignity, yet when he walked his eyes where usually focused in front of him and on to his way and not looking all around and checking people out, he was shy. Whenever he met anyone he would always be the one to start the welcoming, he would generously extend his hand, and would smile, and would never leave your hand until you left his hand first, and if he met you and welcomed you, he did so with his whole body - meaning his whole body would be facing you and his whole attention, and not just sh

Al Sayeda Aisha (The Prophets wife) said: "that he didn't talk so much like many of you people, but if you tried to remember exactly what he said and how many words, you where able to count exactly how many words he said"

Abu Hurayra continues and says: and I never met a more courageous, finer or a person with such a lit up face than the Prophet (PBUH).

Anas Ibn Malek says: I have never felt silk that was softer than the Prophets hands, and I have never smelt misk more beautiful than the smell of the Prophet (PBUH).

Abdulah Ibn Salam who was a Jew and converted to Islam says: I came to see the Prophet when he arrived in Medina and I looked at his face and kept saying this face is not a face of a liar, this face is that of a Prophet.

What where the Prophets Ethics and Manners like?
Here we will mention some specific manners or character descriptions and give an example of them in the Prophet (PBUH).

Al Ithar: To put others needs above yours.
During the battle of "Al Khandak" which was taking place in a very harsh environment with very little food available for the Muslims, everybody started getting very hungry and the Sa7aba from their intense hunger started to tie a big piece of rock to each ones stomach so that it would squeeze it and not make them feel the hunger so much, and then they went to the Prophet to complain and told him: "O Prophet we are starving, and look every one of us has tied a piece of rock onto his stomach from the hunger", so the Prophet replied by showing them his stomach and they all saw that the Prophet (PBUH) had tied 2 pieces of rocks onto his stomach and not just one. Later on Jaber Ibn Abdelah says: this really upset me, to see that the Prophet (PBUH) is hungrier than all of us and is tieing more rocks, yet he is not complaining and is being patient - I felt so bad that the Prophet would be that hungry, so I ran to my wife and asked her; do you have any food. Jaber continues to tell the story and say: then arrived the Prophet with the men, smiling at me and told me: " Jaber, you will be our door man today, I will go in and send me ten men at a time" - there where 1500 warriors that day, and they went in ten at a time in beautiful order and harmony as Islam always tells us and not in some chaotic way that we see even fewer Muslims act like these days in situations that require order - anyways - they went in ten at a time, and each ten that came out, Jaber would ask them: "have you had enough to eat?", and they would reply: "yes Alhamdolelah" - and this kept happening till the whole army was fed, then the Prophet (PBUH) came out and told Jaber: "Jaber, go in now and eat you and your family for God has blessed your food for you".

Loyalty:
12 years after the death of Al Sayeda Khadeeja (the Prophets first wife), he was sitting one day at home with Al Sayeda Aisha (his wife), and he heard someone knocking at the door and a female voice asking permission to come in, and as soon as he heard the voice he got very excited and got up fast and smiled and said "Allah We Akabr - its as if I hear the voice of Khadeeja again?! - maybe its Hala the sister of Khadeeja? God please make her be Hala, God please let the person standing at the door turn out to be Hala" So Al Sayeda Aisha got jelous and said: "do u still remember that old woman (she's referring to Khadeeja), when God has given you a better wife (she's referring to her self) - and the Prophet (PBUH) here was in a situation and even after 12 years of her death he replied: "No, God has not given me someone better than her, for she has stood by me and sheltered me when everyone around me rejected me, she believed in me when everyone else c

Gallantry:
An Arab man once came to Mecca during the period where Mecca was still ruled by Korysh before the spread of Islam and Abu Jahl was persecuting and hurting Muslims all over Mecca. Abu Jahl was like a bully and he was the person who had hurt the Prophet the most, made fun of him the most and tried to kill him. Abu Jahl had taken the arab mans money and would not give it back to him, and the man didn't know what to do, and every time he went to ask help of one of the nobles or lords of Korysh and ask them to help him get his money back from Abu Jahl - they would all say that they cant, so the poor man was helpless and asked the lords of Korysh who can help me then get my money back from Abu Jahl - so the lords of Korysh thought this would be a nice opportunity to laugh and make a joke out of the man and out of Mohammad (PBUH), so they told the man, the best person to help you get your money back would be this guy praying over there, he's Abu Jahls best friend- and they p
Some people might ask, so how come that giant animal was visible that day to Abu Jahl but never appeared when Abu Jahl physically tried to hurt the Prophet (PBUH) - well because the Prophet was to be hurt to show the people how precious and valuable Islam is and how much the Prophet put up with to spread the word - but when a situation that requires gallantry to show the true spirit of Muslims - then God will stand by your side.

Humbleness:
A man once came to meet the Prophet (PBUH) and was so scared that he is meeting the Prophet - he was shivering -he felt he is going to meet a great king, so the Prophet gently padded him on the shoulders and told him: " don't be so scared, for I am not a king but a slave, I eat as a slave does, walk as a slave does and even my mother use to eat the "kadeed" (which was the worst kind of meat in Mecca during that time"

Honesty:
Even before the Prophet (PBUH) became a Prophet, he was known among the people of Mecca for his Honesty, and so when God finally told him that its time to reveal Islam to all the people - he stood on top of the mountain "Safa" and as loud as he could he said: "people of Korysh, if I tell you now that there is this great army hidden behind this mountain that will come and raid on you, will you believe me?" they replied: "you have never ever lied to us - so we will believe you", so the Prophet (PBUH) says: " then I tell you now that I am here to warn you of a horrible fate if you stay on your ways"

Forgiveness and Mercy:
The day the Prophet (PBUH) and the Muslim army went back and took Mecca, the same Mecca where the people there tortured him and his followers, the same Mecca where they killed his friends and followers, the same Mecca where they tried to kill him, the same Mecca where they took his and his followers money and possessions - and after he enters Mecca and takes over it after 20 years, the people there still insist on being Kufar and non believers - yet he decides after all they did to him and his followers, after still insisting on not believing, he decides to set them all free, to give them all their freedom - even though he could have killed them all or did anything to them - but he set them all free, and after he did so, he started walking around the Kaba, and while he was doing so, comes a man named Fudala and gets a knife and hides it in his cloth and starts to follow the Prophet around the Kaba and slowly starts getting closer because he wants to kill h

Kindness:
There use to be a little boy named "Omire", and Omire had a little bird that he use to love and use to play with all the time, and whenever the Prophet (PBUH) use to walk by and see Omire playing with his bird he used to ask him: "Omire what did "nooghire" do today?" - (the Prophet had given the bird a nickname that sounds close to the name of Omire) - and Omire used to reply: " he is fine dear Prophet", and then one day the Prophet (PBUH) was walking by and saw Omire crying, so he asked him: "why are you crying", so the little boy replied: "nooghire died", so the Prophet (PBUH) stayed with him for a whole hour just playing him and trying to make him happy. Through out this hour the Sa7aba are passing by them and watching the Prophet still sitting with the boy - so they where puzzled, specially that the Prophet is very busy and has so much he needs to attend to, so they asked him, dear Prophet what are you do

Happiness:
Some people think that its not proper to smile or laugh or that good Muslims should not have a sense of humor - and everything is haram and you should just frawn all the time - but Sayeda Aisha said that the Prophet (PBUH) smiled more than most people and he had a light spirit, and that he use to laugh in his house, and not only laugh but also try to get others in his home to laugh, smile and be happy. So he didn't just care that he would have fun and be happy and laugh but also he cared that his wife and family did too.

Omar Ibn Al Khatab was once asked by his son: "father, what memory of the Prophet (PBUH) do u never forget?" Omar replied: "if i forget everything, I will never forget the day I went to the Prophet to ask his permission to go do a Omra (the small pilgrimage other than the Hajj) and the Prophet (PBUH) looked at me and said don't forget me in your prayers my brother - so Omar started to cry, the Prophet is asking me to pray for him? The Prophet of God is asking me to ask God to forgive him and help him? - so Omar told his son, if I forget everything I will never forget when the Prophet (PBUH) asked me to pray for him.

The sa7aba once saw the Prophet (PBUH) crying, so they asked him: why are you crying? The Prophet replied: " I long for my brothers", so they said: " aren't we your brothers?" The Prophet said: "no, you are my friends, but my brothers are those that will come after I die and will not see me, yet they will believe in me". He was talking about us.

The Prophets Death:
The Prophet (PBUH) was at the age of 63 and had become very sick, he could no longer pray the sunna's standing up but had to pray them sitting down. That year he went to a Hajj (made a last pilgrimage) and about 9 nights after his return - he became very sick, and that night he was at the house of his wife "Maymoona", so he gathered his wives and asked them: "do you mind if I go and be taken care of at the house of "Aisha" - the Prophet (PBUH) was asking his wives if it was okay with them! They all replied: " dear Prophet if this is your wish, of course we don't mind" and then the Prophet tried to get out of bed, but he couldn't, he was too week, so Al Fadel Ibn Abass and Ali Ibn Aby Taleb came and carried the Prophet while he leaned on them till he reached the house of Aisha.
Aisha later says: "when he came in being helped by Al Fadel and Ali he was sweating so hard, and trying to wipe the sweat of his face while saying: "La illah ila Allah, Ina lilmawt lasakarat", Sayeda Aisha continues to say, I took the Prophets hand and used it to wipe the sweat off his face, and I used his hands not mine because his hands are better than mine.
While the Prophet (PBUH) was so sick, the Sa7aba heard how his health is deteriorating so they all gathered in the Mosque worried about him trying to know his news - the Prophet heard that they have gathered in the Mosque so he said: "take me to them" and he could hardly get up that they had to spill a lot of water on him so that he could be fully conscious again - he went to see them at the Mosque and gave his last Khotba and said: " I shall meet you again at "al 7od" (which is the well where the Prophet (PBUH) will be quenching the thirst of the faithful on judgment day) and its as if I can see it now from where I stand here, O people I don't worry that you might become non-believers after I die, but I worry about you from this world and that you would compete and fight for things in this world like those before you have done - and then it will destroy you like it did those before you, O people the prayers, the prayers, do not fo
Then the Prophet (PBUH) is carried back to the house of Aisha, and in comes Abdel Rahman Ibn Aby Bakr with a sewak (the piece of wood they used to clean their teeth with) in his hand, and the Prophet stares at the sewak but doesn't say anything, he wants to clean his teeth but he is too week to say the words, but Aisha notices this and takes the sewak from Abdel Rahman and gives it to the Prophet who puts it his mouth and tries to clean his teeth, but he cant, its too rough, so Aisha notices that too, so she takes the sewak and starts to use it on her teeth so that it would become softer for the Prophet (PBUH), then he was able to use it - the Prophet (PBUH) wanted to meet God as clean as he could.
Then Fatema (the Prophets daughter) came in to see him, and when ever she used to come in to see him, he used to get up to her and kiss her between her eyes, but this time he was too week to do so, and Fatema cried, so he told her to come closer cause he wanted to whisper something to her, so she did and he whispered something to her and she started to cry harder and harder, and when he saw her crying this hard he told her to come close again and he whispered something else - this time she smiled and laughed. And after the Prophets death Fatema was asked what did he whisper to you? She replied: "the first time he whispered to me, he told me that he will die today" so I cried, and when he saw me cry, he felt bad for me so the second time he whispered to me he said: "you will be the first member of my family to be re-united with me" so I was so happy I will meet him again.
Then the Prophet (PBUH) was left alone to rest, and while he was alone Aisha heard him raising his hands to the sky and saying: "bal al rafeek al a3la, bal al raffek al a3la" (the higher companion, the higher companion) - Aisha wondered what was happening? What happened was that the Angel Gabriel came to him accompanied by the Angel of Death, and the Angel Gabriel said: " O Prophet of God, the angel of Death is with me and wants your permission to speak to you, and he has never asked anyone's permission before and will never do so again", so the Prophet says: "give him my permission Gabriel", So the Angel of death says: "Al salamo alikom O Prophet of God, for God has sent me to give you a choice, either to stay in this world or to go to God?" so the Prophet (PBUH) replies: "bal al rafeek al a3la, bal al raffek al a3la" (the higher companion, the higher companion) - and then Gabriel says good bye to this world and says:
And then the Prophet (PBUH) dies in the arms of Sayeda Aisha, and then Aisha opens the door to the mosque where the Muslims have gathered trying to find anything about the prophet, she goes in and says " The Prophet of God has died, the Prophet of God has died" and the mosque explodes between those that scream and those that cry and those who cant believe it, Othman Ibn Afan cries like a baby that they have to take him by the hand like a kid, Ali Ibn Aby Taleb sits and cant get back up on his feet, and Omar raises his sword and says: "who ever says he has died I shall cut his throat for he has only went to meet his God the same way Moses did and he shall be back"
But the strongest person that day was Abu Bakr, he went in and looked at the Prophet (PBUH) and kept saying: "wa khalila, wa habiba, wa nabiaa, ma atyabak hayan, wa ma atyabak mayetan" and then he kissed him between his eyes - then Abu Bakr went out to the crowd and said: "if anyone worships Mohammad let him know that Mohammad is dead, but for those who worship Allah - Allah is alive and never dies" so now everyone knew that the Prophet (PBUH) has really died. Omar says: " I ran between the people trying to find a place to hide in alone to scream and cry for the loss of the Prophet (PBUH).
Then the Prophet (PBUH) was buried under the bed of Sayeda Aisha, and when he was buried Anas Ibn Malek said: " the Prophet came into Madina the day of Hijara on a Monday and everything lit up, and the Prophet died on this Monday so everything went dark again".
Then came the first prayer after the death of the Prophet (PBUH) and Bilal stood to call for the prayers, and started till he reached the part that says: " Ash hadoo ana Mohammad Rasool Allah" (I witness that Mohammad is the Prophet of God) - when he reached this part he could not continue, and the whole of Madina broke out crying.

How to Love and get closer to the Prophet (PBUH)?
4 things to do:
1- Pray for him a lot, meaning saying "Alahom ma saly ala sayedina Mohammad" - a lot. The Prophet (PBUH) said: that God has made the job of some angles to tell me whom ever Sala Alia wa salam (prayed on me).
2- Follow His sunna, do as he did.
3- Visit his Madina if you can.
4- Study his life.
